CES Provides Custom 1500 kVA Transformer Solution, Enabling Reliable Power for Commercial & Industrial Facilities
Project Overview
C.E.S. Transformers was selected to supply a 1500 kVA, 44kV Delta power transformer to High Voltage Power & Civil Limited for Panattoni Development’s new state-of-the-art commercial and industrial facility in Halton Hills, Ontario.
This facility, designed as a premium multi-use industrial warehouse and office space, required a reliable and customized power solution to meet the anticipated energy needs of its future tenants.
Objective
The main objective of the C-5899 project was to provide a reliable power source for the new facility, ensuring it could meet the diverse energy demands of multiple industrial and commercial tenants. The transformer needed to be customized to fit the specific site requirements while ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
A secondary objective was timely delivery to High Voltage Power & Civil Limited to align with Panattoni’s overall construction schedule, enabling Panattoni to complete the project on time and have the facility ready for leasing without any power-related delays.
Solution Provided
CES Transformers provided a 1500 kVA, 44kV Delta power transformer with a 600Y/347V low-voltage configuration. The transformer was customized to meet the unique demands of the site, ensuring flexibility for current operations and potential future expansion.
Key Features and Customizations:
- Custom Cabinet Design: The transformer featured a unique configuration where the high-voltage and low-voltage cabinets were placed on opposite sides—an unusual customization that was designed to optimize the facility’s layout and operational workflow.
- Control Cabinet Placement: The control cabinet was positioned between two radiators based on the client’s preferences and site-specific requirements. This customization facilitated easier maintenance access and better operational management.
- Tamper-Proofing and Durability: Since the transformer was installed in an outdoor industrial setting, CES implemented advanced tamper-proofing features, including pentahead bolts and customized steel enclosures, ensuring the transformer would remain secure and protected from environmental factors and unauthorized access.
- Compliance with Regulatory Standards: The transformer was designed and manufactured to meet CSA standards (Canadian Standards Association) and ensure full compliance with regulatory standards, including CSA C2.1-06 and CSA C88-M16, ensuring the transformer was suitable for public and industrial spaces.
Testing for Quality Assurance
To guarantee the transformer’s quality and long-term performance, CES conducted a series of comprehensive tests, carried out by their team of highly trained engineers and technicians:
- Ratio Tests on Connection: Ensured the correct voltage transformation ratios between primary and secondary windings.
- Resistance Measurements: Measured the electrical resistance of the windings to ensure energy efficiency.
- Load Loss Test: Measured the energy loss under load conditions to confirm operational efficiency.
- Polarity and Phase Relation Test: Verified the correct phase relationship between primary and secondary windings.
- No-Load Loss and Excitation Current Test: Assessed energy loss and current draw when the transformer was energized but not supplying load, ensuring minimal idle energy waste.
- Impedance Test: Ensured the impedance met the required levels for voltage regulation.
- Applied Potential Test: Confirmed the insulation’s capability to handle high-voltage conditions, critical for safety.
- Induced Potential Test: Tested the transformer’s ability to endure over-voltage conditions without breakdown, ensuring reliability under all operating conditions.
