Delivering a 2500 kVA Transformer, Ensures 24/7 Reliable Power for Industrial Condos—Delivered On-Time and CSA Compliant

Project Overview

C.E.S. Transformers was selected to provide a 2500 kVA, 44kV Delta transformer to Ontario High Voltage for Ripple Developments Industrial Condos.

This transformer was essential for powering the facility’s commercial and industrial operations, designed to handle the increasing power demands of the tenants. Ontario High Voltage, a long-term client, chose CES for its reputation for delivering high-quality transformers and its expertise in customized power solutions for complex industrial projects.

Objective

The primary objective of the C-5809 project was to ensure a reliable power supply for the new industrial condos, which required a robust transformer capable of handling high-load, commercial, and industrial operations. The transformer had to comply with stringent CSA standards, ensuring safe and efficient power delivery.

CES was also responsible for ensuring that the transformer was delivered within a precise timeframe aligned with the construction schedule to avoid delays.

The project’s secondary objective was to ensure that the transformer’s design would accommodate future needs, including potential expansion or increased power demands from tenants.

Solution Provided

CES Transformers delivered a 2500 kVA, 44kV Delta power transformer with a 600Y/347V low-voltage configuration designed specifically for an industrial condo project. This transformer was customized to meet the client’s specific power needs and environmental conditions.

Key Features and Customizations:

  • Custom Cabinet Design: The transformer’s cabinet was customized to meet the site’s unique conditions and layout. This included designing an outgoing feeder orientation that suited the facility’s configuration. Additionally, CES created a steel sleeve enclosure for the incoming conduits, providing an extra layer of protection for the critical connections.
  • Tamper-Proofing: Given the transformer’s installation in a public outdoor area, CES incorporated advanced tamper-proof features, including pentahead bolts that prevent unauthorized access. This feature ensures the long-term security and safety of the transformer.
  • Compliance with Regulatory Standards: CES worked closely with Ontario High Voltage to ensure that the transformer complied with all necessary regulations from design to final testing, including CSA C2.1-06 and CSA C88-M16 compliance, which are vital for electrical distribution in public and industrial spaces.

Testing for Quality Assurance

To ensure the highest levels of quality and reliability, CES subjected the C-5809 transformer to a series of comprehensive tests conducted by their extensively trained staff of electrical engineers and technicians.

These tests are designed to validate the transformer’s performance and compliance with all regulatory standards:

  • Ratio Tests on Connection: Ensures the correct voltage transformation ratios between the primary and secondary windings.
  • Resistance Measurements: Verifies the internal electrical resistance of the windings to ensure efficient energy transfer.
  • Load Loss Test: Measures energy loss under load conditions, critical for understanding transformer efficiency.
  • Polarity and Phase Relation Test: Ensures proper alignment of the phase relationships between primary and secondary windings.
  • No-Load Loss and Excitation Current Test: Assesses energy loss and current draw when the transformer is energized but not supplying the load, ensuring minimal losses.
  • Impedance Test: Verifies the impedance of the transformer, ensuring it meets specified levels for voltage regulation.
  • Applied Potential Test: Ensures the transformer’s insulation is effective under high voltage conditions, which is critical for safety.
  • Induced Potential Test: This verifies that the transformer can handle over-voltage conditions without breakdown, ensuring long-term reliability.

Results & Outcomes

The transformer delivered by CES provided Ontario High Voltage with a reliable, long-term power solution for industrial condos. The project was completed on time, enabling the client to meet their construction deadlines and begin tenant operations without delays.

The 2500 kVA transformer met all performance requirements, providing consistent and reliable power to the industrial facility. This resulted in uninterrupted operations and the ability to handle the tenants’ growing power demands.

The custom tamper-proof design added significant security to the transformer, ensuring that the critical infrastructure would remain protected in a public, outdoor space. This also minimized maintenance needs and enhanced the unit’s durability in the long term.

By leveraging its commitment to quality, rigorous testing, and adherence to regulatory standards, CES was able to deliver a transformer solution that met the technical, operational, and safety needs of the development condos to which it was delivered.

“Ontario High Voltage takes pride in delivering successful projects to our customers, in order to do that we have to hold our vendors to high standards. This means quality products being delivered within the agreed timeline, CES has achieved this for us on numerous occasions. Our vendors are our partners.”
